The Brunch Crunch

After a fun, but tiring weekend, brunch calls.

It'll be Cosmo's this morning, instead of biking to Jean Talon in the rain (even though, chers étudiants, try going to Jean Talon at the end of a rainy day and ask for the vendor's samples; they'll give you a zillion).

Cosmo's is rated one of the best brunch spots in the city. The Sparrow, Beauty's, L'Avenue, Chez José and Fuschia are top for brunch as well. I loved Fuschia: think adorable, small interior, apple cider, omlettes and cupcakes, and the music (a guitar player comes in on the weekends). Chez José has a pretty remarkable exterior, with large murals on the outside, but a very small menu of stuff I would probably make at home. So if you go, get the seafood soup. It's tomato-based, but you probably wouldn't make this one at home. I've yet to try the other restaurants!

I have a feeling I'm going to rate Cosmo's a 10 clogged arteries out of 10.

2 hours later-editing post-post-burger

Since it was 1:30 by the time we sat ourselves down at 2 of the 11 stools in the homey diner, we both decided on the cheeseburgers and cherry coke.
Cosmo's is not your dainty edible flower type brunch. It's greasy spoon and well done. We got the feeling the owner, Nick, was kind of a legend. He knew the customers all by name and some dudes came in and gave him rice crispies as a gift, which he then generously passed on to us. Nick cooked up all the orders in a narrow kitchen, Patati Patata style.
The burger was juicy, the bun was crispy and soft at the same time, and the vegetables heaping. They were disappointed that as first-timers, we didn't try to potatoes, but we couldn't stomach it then. For a measly 3.50, the burger was more than satisfying.

Summing up: Perfect lazy hangout for young poor folks like us.

5843 Sherbrooke Street West. Hours: Breakfast starts early and ends late late...
